This is Holy Week which for most of us is a time to slow down and reflect on the true cost of our Salvation. It begins with Palm Sunday, the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey while the crowd put down their cloaks and palm leaves for Him. They sang "Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord." They received him as a King, a prophet, some even called him Messiah. All of this would change very soon. On Monday he went straight to the Temple only to find all sorts of wickedness happening in the very shadow of God’s Temple. He drove the money changers out calling them a den of thieves in what is supposed to be a house of prayer. Tuesday Jesus preached all day to any who would listen. At one point He wailed at the Pharisees calling, them Hypocrites, blind guides, whitewashed tombs, waterless clouds, snakes, a brood of vipers. Then he lamented: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” Wednesday is known to some as "Spy Wednesday" because Judas agreed to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, the going rate for a slave at that time. Also on this day, an unknown but now famous woman anointed Jesus with expensive perfume from her alabaster box; symbolic of His burial. On Thursday, "Maundy Thursday", Jesus had His Last Supper with the disciples and commanded that we repeat this until is returns. Friday is called "Good Friday" because it is a very good day for us but it was not so for Jesus. On this day Jesus was mercilessly beaten and crucified – the price required for your sins and mine. Saturday Jesus descended to hell and set the captives free. Death was put to death while soldiers were guarding His tomb. This coming Sunday we will celebrate "Resurrection Sunday" as the sun rises over the St. John’s River at The Florida Yacht Club. God raised Jesus from the dead early Easter morning. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? |
